On Monday, in protest over a 30% seller transaction fee hike, a host of Etsy sellers turned their accounts to vacation mode, taking to social media to blast the company and urge customers to avoid the marketplace this week.
The Brooklyn-based company announced last month that the fee it charges sellers would increase to 6.5 percent from 5 percent of sales starting April 11. That was enough for Kristi Cassidy, a Rhode Island-based dressmaker who markets her apparel on Etsy, to take to Reddit and organize a weeklong boycott by her and other sellers.
While 47,000 upset vendors is nothing to sneeze at, that number represents just a fraction of the 5.3 million sellers who work with the company. Etsy officials say the fee increase is necessary to boost marketing spends and expand the services available to sellers.
"Our sellers' success is a top priority for Etsy," a company spokesperson said by email. "We are always receptive to seller feedback and, in fact, the new fee structure will enable us to increase our investments in areas outlined in the petition, including marketing, customer support, and removing listings that don't meet our policies. We are committed to providing great value for our 5.3 million sellers so they are able to grow their businesses while keeping Etsy a beloved, trusted, and thriving marketplace."
Etsy is an e-commerce company that focuses on handmade or vintage items, and craft supplies. In February, the company said sales on its site in 2021 soared 31 percent to $13.5 billion from the year before.
The company said in a Feb. 24 news release that revenue from the increased transaction fee will be invested to improve marketing, seller tools and improve the customer experience.
Sellers tell The Wall Street Journal they don’t want more advertising, though: Some of them are already at order capacity, since all items are handmade. They’re also upset at what they say is a growing number of people selling mass-produced goods they do not design themselves on the platform, and the pressure to offer free shipping, among other things.
