Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) chairman Nurdin Halid says he fears for his life and has asked legislators to facilitate security protection measures for himself and his family.
“My life is under threat. I’ve received SMS containing threats. My family members’ lives are also under threat,” he said during a hearing Tuesday with the House of Representatives’ Commission X overseeing education and sports affairs.
Nurdin’s request immediately triggered reactions from House members, including I Gede Pasek of the Democratic Party, who told Nurdin not to reveal such information to the public.
“ should talk only about general issues. Such things, as a threat to his life, should have been talked about in a closed-door meeting,” Pasek said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
The Tuesday hearing was scheduled to discuss recent issues that have put the PSSI under public scrutiny, including the controversial election for its new chairman and a related dispute with the youth and sports minister that has drawn the attention of FIFA.
Nurdin himself, a graft convict who has led the PSSI since 2003, has recently faced widespread rejection in relation to his bid for a third term in office.
