The National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta is reporting a huge spike in visitors for the Christmas weekend.
“As of 12 p.m , the number of visitors reached over 6,000. We predict that as of that number will increase to 10,000 to 12,000,” Monas technical unit chief Rini Haryani said on Saturday, as quoted by Jakarta official news portal, beritajakarta.com.
Rini said that visitors had come from all over the country, including Sumatra and Kalimantan, and some had come from overseas.
Officers temporarily halted ticket sales at 1 p.m. due to crowds that greatly exceeded the 4,000 people who visited the park on a regular day, Rini said.
“The line was already too long. We had to close to avoid overcapacity and provide comfort to the visitors, “ Rini said.
